Dear President Obama,
For the last two years I had the honor to be the chairman of a small youth organization which organized debates on different political topics. This were two great years. We had really good debates and it was a privilege to be the ‘chair’ of the organization.
However, during these two years I had a dream. I often dreamed that you were there at one of our debates. It was a great dream.
In that dream, you came to our really small building in your big car. You stepped out of your car, I welcomed you and you came inside. You hang your coat on our small peg. Then you walked into our main room. There were 40 of our members waiting for you. They were impressed when you came in.
The debate with you was fantastic. Naturally, you spoke about all the great things you already did. About the healthcare reform bill that you passed. You talked about your beautiful country and about your meeting with our Prime Minister Mark Rutte. Altogether, it was a wonderful evening.
After an hour, you left again. In my last dream, you even sang that small part of Al Green again. I know, Al Green wasn’t here before. But still, you sang.
Dear president Obama, it was a great dream. Every time I had it. And more and more I started to believe in this dream. Of course it is a crazy dream, maybe an impossible dream. But the more I had this dream, I felt like I had to invite you.
With this letter I want to invite you to come to our place one time. To meet the political youngsters of the Netherlands. To talk about the relationship between the Netherlands and the United States of America. To fulfill my dream.
I can imagine that you are too busy to come to the Netherlands. If it’s easier for you, we can come to Washington too. We'll rent a small building there to have this debate with you.
I know this is not a really realistic dream. But I would regret not trying to. Dreams are there to make them come true. It’s always better to try, than to do nothing.
Dear president Obama, I wish you all the best in 2012. I hope, I’m even convinced, that it will be your year again. Yes you can.
Yours faithfully,
Wouter Booij
